Technical challenges and solution approaches
NovaFilt is developing a ceramic nanofiltration membrane for reusing process water in the food industry. The first technical challenge lies in the pore size distribution: for the finest fractions, flux in the company's own test series drops to 11 to 14 l/m² per hour, requiring chemical cleaning so often that it degrades the coating.1
Existing sol-gel coatings cannot be used here, because the sintering temperature of the carrier exceeds 1,150 degrees Celsius.2 NovaFilt is therefore investigating a two-step process in which the active layer is applied at a lower temperature. The technical risk lies in the shrinkage stress between the two layers; this route has not been tested before for this combination of materialsassumption.
